Relay EMS recognises the crucial role of supporting new learners who aspire to join the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) industry. We are proud to contribute to the development of future EMS professionals through our bursary initiative, which not only provides financial assistance but also nurtures the dedication and commitment required in the EMS field.
Success Stories: Yanni Geldenhuys and Beyonce Jacobs
Yanni Geldenhuys
In 2024, our first bursary was awarded to Yanni, enabling her to complete her final year of the Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care at Nelson Mandela University. Yanni’s journey with Relay EMS began years earlier when she worked in our Events Department. Her time with us provided invaluable experience, a deep understanding of the EMS industry, and a solid foundation for her studies. Yanni’s dedication and hard work paid off as she successfully completed her degree and embarked on her EMS career with Relay EMS in 2025.
Yanni’s Reflection: “I am honoured to share my heartfelt gratitude for the bursary I received from Relay EMS. This support eased the financial burden of higher education, allowing me to focus fully on my academic pursuits. This support is more than just financial assistance; it confirms my aspirations and capabilities. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity, which has profoundly impacted my educational journey.”
Beyonce Jacobs
In 2025, we awarded Beyonce Jacobs a bursary to begin her Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care through the Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care at Netcare 911. Like Yanni, Beyonce worked in our Events Department as a first aider, demonstrating her passion and commitment to EMS. Her experiences at Relay EMS have given her a unique advantage as she embarks on her academic journey.
Beyonce’s Reflection: “I want to thank Relay EMS for the incredible opportunity to further my studies in EMS. Bursaries are a significant benefit, providing financial assistance to students like me who are passionate about pursuing their dreams. This support allows me to focus on my studies without the stress of additional costs. I am grateful for the trust and support from the Relay EMS team.”
Understanding Bursaries
Bursaries are financial aid granted to students in need, those who excel academically and practically, or individuals who show a commitment and dedication to their field of study and go out of their way to demonstrate this. Unlike student loans, bursaries do not require repayment, making them a vital resource for students who might not otherwise afford higher education.
The Impact of Bursaries
Bursaries alleviate financial stress, allowing students to focus on their studies and personal growth. They provide a sense of responsibility, encouraging recipients to make the most of their education and contribute to their communities.
Beyonce Jacobs’ Final Words: “Thank you to the Relay EMS team for their unwavering support and dedication to nurturing future EMS professionals. Your efforts impact the lives of the bursary recipients. Thank you for believing in me and supporting my dreams. This is more than a job – it’s a calling to help those in need.”
Relay EMS is committed to developing future EMS professionals through our bursary initiative. We believe in investing in individuals who show commitment, passion, and dedication to work in the EMS industry. EMS offers wonderful career opportunities for learners.
In support of this, Relay EMS provides opportunities for First Aiders who are still at school, have a valid first aid certificate and are 16 years of age to submit their details to our Events Department. We provide opportunities for them to work with our staff at various events. This way, they can gain skills and experience and see if EMS is a career. Learners can submit their details to jbrits@relayems.co.za
