Sunburn

Getting sunburn is just not cool, and really bad for children. Even one big day under the sun can double your risk of melanoma! Always use sunscreen before heading out into the sun and remember to wear a hat. Here are 5 ways to reduce pain and damage … and when sunburn may need medical attention.

 

  1. Act fast: If you feel the tingling of a burn or see any sign of reddening, get out of the sun and start treatment.Moisturise: After a cool shower or bath,

DO NOT scrub, pick or peel your skin or blisters.Hydrate: Burns can cause you to become dehydrated, therefore consume extra fluids like water and energy drinks and watch for signs of dehydration (dry mouth, reduced urination, headache, dizziness or sleepiness).   4. Medicate: If you do suffer from sunburn, the best medication to take is a pain tablet together with an anti-inflammatory. Ask your local pharmacist or RELAY EMS paramedic for advice if unsure.
  5. Assess the burns: Most sunburns can be treated at home with pain medication and an after-sun lotion. However, if blisters start to appear, please visit your nearest GP or hospital to get further treatment, as blisters indicate second-degree burns.
