Medicine Poisoning

BY Relay EMS

If you find your child with an opened – mostly empty – container of pills or medicine, what do you do? Even though the child does not look ill or only took one or two tablets, always take the child to the nearest casualty department as certain tablets can be dangerous, even in small amounts.

Stay calm, act quickly
Get the tablets away from the child. Make him or her spit out any items or remove it with your fingers. Keep the tablets and/or pill container and show it to the RELAY paramedic or casualty doctor. This will help them to treat your child more effectively.

Do not make the child vomit –this may cause more damage.

If the child does vomit, turn them on their side and keep them in that position until help arrives.

If your child is unconscious, not breathing or having seizures, phone RELAY EMS right away. Once the paramedic is on their way, start with two gentle breaths and chest compressions if there is no pulse. If uncertain, the RELAY call taker will guide you through the process of doing chest compressions and giving breaths, over the phone.

Remember

  • Keep all medicines locked up and out of your child’s reach.
  • Use safety latches on drawers and cabinets where you keep objects that may be dangerous to your child.
