Diving Accident

BY Relay EMS

It’s warm and everyone decides to go for a swim, when someone dives into the shallow water. A few seconds later the person floats on the surface, unable to move their arms or legs. What do you do now?

Use the FAST test.

  1. Immediately turn the patient around if their face is in the water, so that their face and mouth can come out of the water.
  2. Send someone to phone RELAY EMS while keeping the patients’ neck as still as possible in the neutral position.
  3. If more hands are available, get a solid, flat surfaced object like a wooden board, and place underneath the patient.
  4. If the object is not immediately available, do one of two things, depending on whether or not the patient is breathing:

If breathing:

  • Continue to keep the patients’ neck as still as possible and calm the patient if they’re awake.

If not breathing:

  • Give the patient gentle breaths, one breath every six seconds, while awaiting the ambulance, and keeping the neck still.
  • Once the hard surfaced object has arrived, place it under the patient and while continuously keeping the patients’ neck still, attempt to remove the patient from the water.
  • Continue breathing for the patient if not breathing yet.
  • If the patient is awake, keep the neck still and place towels or blankets over the patient to prevent them from cooling off too quickly.
  • Keep the patients’ neck in the neutral position until the Relay paramedic has arrived and instructs you to let go.

REMEMBER DO NOT DIVE INTO A POOL OR ANY WATER IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW DEEP IT IS.
